Keezharnelli (Phyllanthus Niruri)



Keezharnelli is a plant found in common field areas and irrigated areas but also grows in some desert areas. This plant is a member of the Phyllanthaceae family; its scientific name is Phyllanthus niruri. It is a medicinal plant with branches and green-red stems. It is also known as Kiruttar Nellie in Malayalam. Their leaves are found on both sides of the branches, away from the stem. The leaves are whitish green or dark green in color. When mature, yellow-green flowers appear beneath the leaves. It is known by many names, like Keerkanelli and Kierzhukkai Nellie. It is a plant pollinated by small insects. A flower has one male stamen and three female stamens for pollination. Pollination is possible when small insects visit these flowers. The flowers, which are pollinated in this way, appear as pods at the base of the petiole in the form of gooseberries. Each of these pods contains three seeds. This plant is called Keezhar Nelly because the seeds, like gooseberries, are found under the leaf stalk. This plant is used as a root when it is used for its medicinal properties. Keezharnelli is used medicinally for jaundice, fever, and urinary disorders. Phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin contained in Keezharnelli are the factors that reduce jaundice. Using Keezhar Nellie Oil kachi is very good for hair growth. Also, it is used as a medicine in Ayurveda for wounds and sores in the body due to its cooling properties. This medicine has been found to have no side effects. Diuretic. It also helps with digestion. But this is not so good for rheumatic patients.

Phyllanthus niruri thrives in tropical climates with high humidity. It prefers well-drained, loamy soil but can adapt to a variety of soil types, including sand and clay. The most common method of propagation is by seed, which must be sown in moist soil. The seeds are usually sown directly in the soil at the beginning of the rainy season. Frequent watering is necessary, especially during dry periods. Periodic weed control is necessary to prevent competition for nutrients. Organic fertilizers, such as compost or cow dung, can be used to enhance growth.

The whole plant is harvested when it is ripe, usually before the flowering stage begins, for optimal medicinal content, and should be dried and stored in a cool, dry place to preserve its active compounds.

Phyllanthus niruri is known for its various health benefits as it contains rich phytochemicals, including alkaloids, flavonoids, lignans, and tannins.

Known as a "stone breaker," it is traditionally used to treat kidney stones and promote overall kidney health. It helps break down stones and prevents their formation. Another one exhibits hepatoprotective properties, which are very beneficial in the treatment of liver diseases such as hepatitis and jaundice. It helps detoxify and rejuvenate the liver.

Exhibits antiviral activity, particularly against hepatitis B and C viruses, by inhibiting viral replication.

Antioxidant activity: Rich in antioxidants, it helps fight oxidative stress and reduces the risk of chronic diseases. It has anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties and is very effective against various pathogens. . It also reduces inflammation in body parts and has been found to be very effective in treating gout and other inflammatory diseases. Improves digestion and is used to treat gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea and constipation. It may also help regulate blood sugar levels, making it useful in managing diabetes. It has been used in Ayurvedic, Chinese, and Amazonian traditional medicine for centuries. It is taken as a tea or decoction to treat a variety of ailments, including urinary tract infections, liver disease, and skin diseases.
